In this lesson you will learn simple words for food and drink in Mandarin Chinese, such as water, tea, coffee and rice. You will also learn how to say what you want to eat or drink. The small letters under each word (pinyin) show you how to say it.

阿贝贝和阿尔玛兹在亚的斯亚贝巴的一家小饭馆。服务员问:"你们要什么?"阿贝贝说:"我要咖啡。"阿尔玛兹说:"我要茶和米饭。"服务员说:"好的!"阿尔玛兹也想喝水,所以她说:"请给我水。"他们很高兴。

The word "和" (hé) means "and". Use it between two things, like "茶和米饭" (chá hé mǐfàn = tea and rice). To drink is "喝" (hē) and to eat is "吃" (chī).
Well done! You learned food and drink words: 水 (shuǐ=water), 茶 (chá=tea), 咖啡 (kāfēi=coffee), 米饭 (mǐfàn=rice). You can now order using "我要…" (wǒ yào… = I want…) and ask politely with "请" (qǐng = please). Practice at a buna café in Addis Ababa!
