Comparing and opinions

Goal: compare two or more things using comparatives and superlatives — for example 'Tea is cheaper than coffee, but coffee is the most popular drink in Ethiopia' — and give your own opinion politely with phrases like 'I think', 'I prefer' and 'I agree'.

In my opinion, the market near the bus station is bigger and cheaper than the small shop on our street.

I think buna is the most popular drink in Addis Ababa, but tea is a little healthier in the evening.

I prefer the blue dress to the red one, because it is more beautiful and not as expensive.

Do you agree that walking to the market is better than taking a taxi when the roads are busy?

Useful opinion phrases: 'I think (that) ...' to start an opinion; 'In my opinion, ...' for something a little more formal; 'I prefer X to Y' to say what you like more; 'I agree' / 'I don't agree' to respond; and 'You are right, but ...' to disagree politely.

Almaz and Dawit are two friends who often talk about food and shopping in Addis Ababa. Almaz thinks that the big market in the centre is the best place to buy vegetables, because it is cheaper than the small shops and the tomatoes there are fresher. Dawit agrees that the prices are lower, but he says the centre is more crowded and far from his house, so for him the nearest shop is more convenient, even though it is a little more expensive. When they go out to eat, Almaz prefers injera with shiro to rice, because she thinks it is the most delicious meal and the healthiest one too. Dawit doesn't completely agree; he says that injera is tasty, but pasta is quicker and easier to cook after a long day at work. In the end they decide that the best plan is simple: on busy weekdays they eat near home, but on Saturdays, when they have more time, they take a minibus to the bigger market together and cook a large meal for their families. Both of them think that sharing food with friends is more important than saving a few birr.

Recap: short adjective + -er + 'than' (cheaper than), long adjective + 'more ... than' (more expensive than); 'the' + -est or 'the most ...' for the top of a group (the best, the most popular). Share opinions with 'I think', 'I prefer X to Y', and 'I agree'.
