The alphabet & sounds

In this lesson you will meet the special German letters ä, ö, ü and ß. You will hear example words and learn to spell your name in German.
The two dots over a letter are called an umlaut. They change the sound. The letter ß is called "Eszett" and sounds like a sharp "s".

Sara ist neu in der Klasse. Die Lehrerin fragt: "Wie schreibt man deinen Namen?" Sara sagt langsam: "S-A-R-A." Dann zeigt sie auf einen Apfel und ein Buch und sagt: "der Apfel, das Buch." Die Lehrerin sagt: "Sehr schön!"

To spell your name, say the letters one by one. In German the letter "A" sounds like "ah", "E" like "ay", and "I" like "ee".
