Common verbs & "sein"

In this lesson you will learn the most important German verb, 'sein' (to be): ich bin, du bist, er ist. You will also learn 'haben' (to have), 'gehen' (to go), 'kommen' (to come), 'mögen' (to like) and 'möchten' (would like), and use them in short sentences.

Almaz ist aus Addis Abeba. Sie ist Studentin. Am Morgen geht sie zum Markt. Sie sagt: "Ich habe Zeit. Ich gehe zum Markt." Kebede kommt auch. Er mag Buna sehr. Im Café sagt er: "Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte." Almaz ist glücklich. Der Tag ist gut.

To say where you are from, use 'sein' + 'aus': Ich bin aus Äthiopien (I am from Ethiopia). To say where you go, use 'gehen' + 'zu': Ich gehe zum Markt (I go to the market).
