Talking about the past

In this lesson you will learn to talk about the past in German. You will build the Perfekt tense with "haben" or "sein" plus a past participle, and use time words like "gestern" (yesterday) and "letzte Woche" (last week).

Gestern habe ich Buna getrunken.

ትናንት ቡና ጠጣሁ።

Ich habe Injera gegessen.

እንጀራ በላሁ።

Letzte Woche bin ich zum Markt gegangen.

ያለፈው ሳምንት ወደ ገበያ ሄድኩ።

Abebe hat zehn Birr bezahlt.

አበበ አሥር ብር ከፈለ።

Wir sind nach Addis Abeba gefahren.

ወደ አዲስ አበባ ተጓዝን (ሄድን)።

Gestern hatte Almaz einen langen Tag. Am Morgen ist sie früh aufgestanden und hat einen starken Buna getrunken. Dann ist sie zum Markt in Addis Abeba gegangen und hat Tomaten und frische Injera gekauft. Sie hat dreißig Birr bezahlt. Am Nachmittag hat ihr Bruder Dawit angerufen, und sie haben lange gesprochen. Am Abend ist Almaz müde nach Hause gekommen und hat mit ihrer Familie gegessen. Es war ein guter Tag.

Notice the pattern in the story: "hat ... getrunken", "hat ... gekauft", "ist ... gegangen", "ist ... gekommen". The helping verb agrees with the person, and the participle always sits at the end.
