In this lesson you will talk about school and university in German and explain your opinions and reasons. The grammar focus is subordinate clauses (Nebensätze) with dass (that) and weil (because). The key rule is word order: in a subordinate clause the conjugated verb moves to the very END. You will learn vocabulary like die Schule, die Universität, der Unterricht, die Prüfung and das Stipendium, and you will practise sentences such as: Ich glaube, dass Bildung wichtig ist.

Sara wohnt in Addis Abeba und besucht die Universität. Sie sagt, dass das Studium nicht leicht ist, weil sie jeden Tag viele Stunden lernen muss. Am Morgen geht sie zum Unterricht, und am Nachmittag arbeitet sie in einem kleinen Café, weil sie Geld für ihre Bücher braucht. Ihr Bruder Dawit fragt sie oft, warum sie so hart arbeitet. Sara antwortet, dass sie Ärztin werden will und dass ein gutes Stipendium nur die besten Studenten bekommen. Abends trinkt die Familie zusammen Buna, und Sara erzählt, dass die Prüfung nächste Woche sehr wichtig ist. Ihre Mutter glaubt fest, dass Sara die Prüfung besteht, weil sie fleißig und klug ist.

Recap: after dass (that) and weil (because) the conjugated verb goes to the END of the clause. A comma separates the main clause from the Nebensatz. With modal verbs, the modal sits last and the infinitive just before it: …, weil ich studieren will.
