19.4 AI Monetization

AI monetization is how a product turns its AI capabilities into revenue. Common models include subscriptions, pay-per-use (per API call or token), usage tiers, and selling outcomes (for example charging per resolved support ticket). The key constraint is that the price must comfortably exceed the cost of running the model.

Healthy unit economics: revenue per user stays comfortably above inference cost, so the business scales profitably.

Consider an Ethiopian SMS service that uses AI to auto-reply to customer questions for small shops. If each AI reply costs 0.10 birr in compute but the shop pays 1 birr per handled message, the margin is healthy and the business scales. If the model is too expensive, the same plan loses money.

Scenario

Your AI app's compute cost per user is rising above your flat monthly price. What is the soundest fix?
